A Guesthouse in the Oasis

1. Ten years ago, Hedi Mansour was a taxi driver in Tozeur. Every day, he drove tourists from the airport to the big hotels and listened to their questions about the oasis, the desert and local life. “Most of them wanted to experience the real Tunisia, not just a swimming pool,” he remembers. So in 2017, he and his wife Zohra decided to turn their old family house into a small guesthouse.

2. Today, “Dar Zohra” has six rooms decorated with traditional carpets and palm wood. Guests eat home-made bread and dates from the family’s garden, and Zohra teaches them how to cook local dishes. The guesthouse has its own website, so visitors from Japan, Canada or Germany can book their rooms online. Hedi also takes them on camel rides at sunset and shows them the old part of the town.

3. The project has brought progress to the whole neighbourhood. Hedi has employed four young people from the area, and local craftsmen sell their baskets and pottery to the guests. “Tourism is not only about big hotels,” Zohra says. “When visitors stay with families, they understand our culture better, and the money stays in the region.” Last year, the couple received a national prize for responsible tourism, and they are now planning to open a second house in Nefta.

  • Model: Dear Emma, Thank you for your email. I’m so happy that you are coming to my town next summer! Getting around is easy: taxis are cheap and buses are frequent, but if you want to visit other cities, you can take a louage. There are many places to visit, like the old medina, the fish market and the beautiful beach. You should also try our local food, especially couscous with fish and brik. Be careful, it is very hot in July, so don’t forget your hat and sun cream. If you book your hotel early, it will be cheaper. I’m looking forward to showing you around. Best wishes, Your friend.
